Anacortes, WA – The Anacortes Police Department has taken a teacher from Island View Elementary School into custody for suspicion of Child Molestation Charges based on what the school district is calling “allegations of inappropriate boundary invasions by the employee.”

The Anacortes School District was contacted by Detectives and the victims family on June 17th, 2019 based on a student report.  The employee was immediately placed on paid administration leave and the Anacortes School District received notification on June 21st that the teacher had been arrested for the allegation.

The Anacortes School district said in a statement  that they immediately placed the employee on paid administrative leave. “Student safety is our foremost priority, so we responded quickly”

The school district’s preliminary review indicates “no previous allegations of inappropriate boundary invasions by the employee.”

The School District also said “Maintaining appropriate and safe professional boundaries with students is a primary area of focus for ASD in our Annual Training. We have specific, clear-cut guidelines about appropriate interactions between staff and students, as well as among students and enforce them consistently.”

Mark Wenzel said the School District is cooperating with police during this investigation. Island View families have already been contacted by the district. In addition to the police investigation the school is conducting their own internal review.

If you have any questions related to the incident, you are asked to contact the Anacortes Police Department at (360) 293-4684 or Mark Wenzel directly at (360) 503-1211. You can also email mwenzel@ask103.org.
