Island County, WA– The Oak Harbor School District has informed families that the Island County Public Health notified the school district today of the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 in Island County.  The individual who contracted the virus in the parent of a student at Oak Harbor High School.  The student currently has no symptoms and will remain out of school until they are tested for COVID-19 and cleared.

The Department of Health, Island County Public Health, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the Oak Harbor High School remain open and only close for deep cleaning when  there is a confirmed case with a student or staff member.

Currently the Oak Harbor High School does not have a staff member or student with a confirmed case of COVID-19. Should a student or staff member test positive for COVID-19, the school says they will close that school for sanitizing and continue to take guidance from Island County Public Health at they receive further information.

School attendance is important, but the school says they understand many families are in unique situations and have concerns. They respect the right for each family to keep their child home from school but the absence needs to be communicated to the school attendance office nd it will be excused.

This is a developing story and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
