Bellingham Man Dies in Skagit County Crash

Skagit County, WA- The Washington State Patrol responded with local first responders to a fatal motor vehicle collision around 12:59 p.m. on March 16th, 2021 on Higgins Airport Way near Ovenell Road.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 25-year old Justin Friedrich of Bellingham was traveling Southbound on Higgins Airport Way from Ovenell Road  in a silver 1997 Isuzu Rodeo. Troopers say Friedrich’s vehicle crossed the center line of the roadway and collided with the front left side of a Northbound  2020 Isuzu Box Truck being driven by 69-year old Thomas Chahary of Sedro-Woolley.

Local Firefighters from Skagit County Fire District 2, Fire District 6 and the City of Burlington used extrication equipment, commonly referred to as “The Jaws of Life” to extricate Chahary from his vehicle and paramedics transported him to Skagit Valley Hospital for further treatment.  His condition remains unknown.

The first arriving Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputies provided Life Saving measures, including CPR  to Friedrich, but he succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. Next of Kin notification was made at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Troopers say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Both Vehicles were totaled in the crash. The Isuzu Rodeo was impounded for safe keeping by Joes Towing and Budget Towing Impounded the Box Truck.
