Young Driver Killed in Crash on State Route 20 Near Grassmere

Skagit County, WA– The Washington State Patrol responded with local First Responders to a single vehicle, fatal crash on State Route 20 near 1st Street around 2:29 a.m. on September 2nd, 2021.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, an unidentified driver  was traveling Eastbound on State Route 20 at a high rate of speed in a 1999 Honda Civic  when he failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway. Troopers say his vehicle left the roadway to the right, ran over a curb, traveling approximately 40 feet through a parking lot and struck a tree.

The driver of the Honda, died at the scene.  A passenger in the vehicle, only identified by Troopers as an 18-year old male from Arlington, Washington, was seriously injured and transported by an Air Ambulance to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where his condition remains unknown.  Troopers say the driver was wearing a seat belt but the passenger was not.

The vehicle was totaled and impounded by Cascades Towing and Roadside Services LLC for safe keeping.

Troopers say it is too early to tell if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, and the official cause of the crash remains under investigation.  The name of the passenger was withheld by Troopers until Next of Kin notification could be made to the family of the driver.
