Sedro-Woolley, WA -On July 26th, 2022, Sedro-Woolley Police Department Code Enforcement Officer received a report of a dog left out on a balcony with no shade or water in the extreme heat we are experiencing for our area. The Code Enforcement Officer arrived to check on the dog and received further information from neighbors, also concerned about the well-being of the dog.
Upon making contact at the residence, the dog was located on the balcony in severe distress. The dog was rushed to an emergency medical care facility. The dog died from the heat exposure.
Officers used an infrared thermometer which showed the temperature of the surface of the balcony at 131F. Officers served a search warrant at the residence and retrieved evidence from the scene.
The person responsible for the dog was taken into custody for Animal Cruelty 1st Degree. The suspect will be booked into the Skagit County Community Justice Center for Animal Cruelty.
Some tips provided by the Sedro-Woolley Police Department. Use the 7-second rule. Press the back of your hand against the asphalt (or balcony surface) for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog or any other animal’s paw.
Remember to keep dogs off pavement and asphalt. Use paw protection such as booties, paw wax, etc. Check paws daily for signs of damage. Be Mindful of the seven second rule and only walk your dogs during the coolest hours of the day. The only further advise I could include is USE COMMON SENSE. No animal should be subjected to being trapped on a balcony in this type of weather without water or protection from the heat.
Name the offender. They should be publicly shamed and they should NEVER be allowed to have a pet again. But if no one will name the bitch ill look up public arrest records
