Sedro-Woolley, WA- On December 19th, 2022 at about 8:06 a.m., Sedro-Woolley Police responded to assist Upper Skagit Tribal Police and the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office in response to a recklessly driven vehicle that had been reported as stolen vehicle earlier in the morning on Simms Rd. The driver fled onto Tribal Reservation land where Upper Skagit Tribal Police attempted to stop this vehicle that was confirmed stolen. The suspect did not stop and purposefully struck a Upper Tribal Police vehicle. Thankfully the Upper Skagit Tribal Officer was not injured.

The suspect then strong armed another vehicle from a tribal community member and the suspect fled again with the newly stolen vehicle, nearly striking an Upper Skagit Tribal Officer. Sedro-Woolley Police Department Officers, Skagit County Sherriff’s Deputies and Upper Tribal Police were authorized to pursue the vehicle due to the severity of attempted assault and robbery that just occurred in accordance with House Bill 1054.

A Sedro-Woolley Police Officer successfully deployed spike strips on the vehicle, however the vehicle continued to flee, heading eastbound back towards Tribal Reservation land and back down Helmick Rd and eastbound on SR 20. The suspect vehicle entered into private property off of SR 20 where the driver exited the vehicle momentarily and attempted to enter a building here. The suspect returned to the stolen vehicle and fled again back eastward on SR 20. A Sedro-Woolley Police Officer performed a PIT maneuver causing the vehicle to spin and several vehicles were used to prevent the vehicle from moving further.

Several less lethal tactics, including a OC Spray and a BOLA wrap, were used to gain compliance, and the suspect was arrested with physical force. The suspect was then checked by AID units for injuries and transported to the Skagit County Community Justice Center for felony charges related to this incident. No injuries were reported.

The suspect is confirmed to not be a tribal member and their connection or interest involving the Upper Skagit Tribe is unclear at this time.
