Oak Harbor, Washington– According to police officials, 27-year old Michael “Gibbo” Gibbons, of Oak Harbor took his own life after he believed he had strangled his 28-year old wife to death on Sunday night in a side yard of their home on East Whidbey Avenue.

A neighbor who witnessed the attack, called 9-1-1 to report a possible homicide around 10 pm. The neighbor then ran over to the couple as the man was holding the woman on the ground choking her and intervened. Police Officials said both the neighbor and the man thought the woman was dead.
As Officers arrived, Mr. Gibbons, who believed he had just killed his wife, shot himself in the head. The bullet exited his body and nearly struck a first responding Officer. Other arriving Officers temporarily mistook the good Samaritan neighbor, who had been holding the unconscious woman, as the source of the gunshot. These Officers pulled out their guns but soon discovered what happened and no other persons were injured.

The woman is said to have regained consciousness at the scene and was able to talk as she was transported to the hospital for treatment. Mr. Gibbons later died at the hospital from his self inflicted gunshot wound.
The couple has two young children, who were not home at the time of the incident.
Friends of the family describe Mr. Gibbons as “a US Navy shipmate, who had an unforgettable smile, positive energy and made everything fun”
His Wife Brittany, started an online Memorial Facebook Group for Mr. Gibbons, so his large group of family and friends could keep updated on memorial plans. She posted, “we all lost a great man, my husband, a father, friend, a brother, a shipmate. It’s a tragedy how we lost him, but let us get together to celebrate his life and our memories of him. We haven’t officially came up with a service day but it will be held in Oak Harbor WA, and will be on the naval base. Those who are far away and cannot attend, we understand.” Click here to be taken to the group.
