Whidbey Island: Drivers who use Dike Road near Dugualla Bay on north Whidbey Island should be prepared for a detour in April. Puget Sound Energy has closed Dike Road 24 hours a day for the next three weeks to move power lines located near the road. During the closure, vehicles will use a detour on Jones Road, State Route 20 and East Frostad Road.
The work is necessary for a WSDOT project to build a new dike with a new section of road on top of it where the current southern portion of Dike Road is located. Once that is complete, crews will breach the southern portion of the old dike, built in 1918, to restore the area east of Dike Road to its pre-dike natural state, which included mudflats and a saltwater marsh.
The project is environmental mitigation for the SR 532 Davis Slough Bridge project between Stanwood and Camano Island. It will be complete in winter 2016.
