Whatcom Teen Killed in Crash on I-90, 3 Injured

Kittitas County, WA: July 30th, 2015: 3:56 PM.

 The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatality car accident on East I-90 near milepost 99 in Kittitas County. This is about 6 miles West of Ellensburg.

According to the press memo, 18 year old, Sofia Milstead of Ferndale, was was driving a 1999 Subaru Legacy Eastbound on I-90 near Milepost 99 when her vehicle veered to the Right across lane one and left the roadway. She over-corrected, coming back onto the Interstate and the vehicle rolled and came to rest on it’s top. Sofia died at the scene.  The press memo states she was wearing her seat belt and drugs or alcohol are not suspected in the crash.

Several Passengers in the car were injured.

 Alexa Smiley, 18 of Lynden was  injured and transported by medics to Kittitas Valley Hospital.  The press memo states she was wearing her seat belt.

Katherine Webb, 18 of Blaine was injured and transported by medics to Kittitas Valley Hospital. The press memo states she was wearing her seat belt.

Nichole Deboer, 18 of Sedro Woolley was injured and transported by medics to Kittitas Valley Hospital. The press memo states she was wearing her seat belt.

The vehicle was impounded by Deans Towing for safe keeping.

The cause of the accident is listed as Improper lane travel and no charges are pending.

According to some of Sofia’s postings on the popular social media site Twitter, the girls were on their way to The Watershed Concert, at the Gorge in Eastern Washington when the crash occurred.

She loved Country music and “The Country Life”.  One specific post said “I’M GOING TO GO CRAZY WHEN THOMAS RHETT STEPS ON THE GORGE STAGE AHHHH #watershed2015“

All of Sofia’s social media accounts, such as her Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram are filled with positive quotes about life, pictures of her smiling and complimenting others.  It is pretty apparent from their interactions online,  that her sister is also one of  her best friends and Sofia  made a big impact on everyone she knew.

Her Twitter account profile indicated she was  looking forward to attending Washington State University.

Her friends say she lived in Ferndale, but attended school in Lynden.
