SR9 Accident Scene: Photo Garrett Schafer

The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal crash on State Route 9 near Buchanan street in Clear Lake.
According to the press memo, Rex Carlson, 46, of Mount Vernon was illegally passing a vehicle Northbound in the Southbound Lanes of SR9 on a 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle in a no passing zone when the crash occurred.

The press memo states the rider applied the brakes in an attempt to stop and laid his bike down. He was struck in the Southbound lane of SR9 by a Southbound 1993 Honda Accord. The Accord was driven by Jack Sather, 56 of Mount Vernon.

The press memo states the motorcycle rider was wearing a USDOT Compliant Helmet, but did not have a motorcycle endorsement.
The press memo also states that drugs or were a factor in the incident, although they did not clarify further. Note: We are working to clarify how they were a factor in the crash.

The Driver of the Honda has been cited with Driving under the influence. He is being considered the victim in the accident and won’t face additional chargesaccording to the Washington State Patrol.
The cause of the accident is listed as illegal Passing.
