Stanwood Man Killed In Crash with Island County Sheriff’s Vehicle

Camano Island, WA- The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal crash around 5:23 pm on September 12th, 2015. The accident was reported at Camano Drive and South Awa Lane on Camano Island involving a motorcycle and an Island County Sheriff’s Vehicle.

According to the press memo from the Washington State Patrol, Leonard Hooppaw, 43 of Stanwood was Southbound on South Camano Drive at a high rate of speed on a 1990 Harley Davidson Motorcycle.

The press memo states as he approached South Awa Drive, he failed to negotiate a right curve in the road, crossed the double center line and  hit a black 2014 Dodge Charger. The Dodge  Charger was a fully marked  Island County Sheriff’s  vehicle. The motorcycle rider was ejected from the bike upon impact.    The Charger was driven by Island County Deputy Luke Plambeck, of Coupeville. 

The deputy was transported to Providence Hospitals Colby Campus with non life threatening injuries.  The motorcycle rider died at the scene.

Both Vehicles were impounded to the Washington State Patrol Bullpen.

The press memo states the cause of the accident was speeds to fast and it was unclear if drugs or alcohol plated a role in the accident. Charges were not pending as the causing driver was deceased.
