Leadership Skagit and Growing Veterans Team Up to “Raise the Roof”

MOUNT VERNON: Leadership Skagit (LS) is a program that strengthens and transforms our community by developing a network of business of community leaders. Our Leadership Skagit Team, Blue Diamonds, is partnering with Growing Veterans (GV) to “Raise the Roof” of a Greenhouse for their Starbird Farm.

“At Growing Veterans we’re not just farming or helping vets, we’re trying to create a new paradigm in how people understand military veterans and their local food systems simultaneously,” said Executive Director Chris Brown.

 Veterans face many different issues when reintegrating back into civilian life: unemployment, homelessness, divorce, depression, and suicide. Growing Veterans believes that in most cases, the root cause of these issues is isolation. Isolated from the peers they served with, from family and friends, from the community as a whole, it can be difficult for a veteran to remain resilient and get the proper support that they need.

Raising a Roof of a Greenhouse will provide just that. It will extend the growing season of this organization and provide a place for veterans of all abilities to heal, build community, and grow delicious food.

Blue Diamond’s project goal is to raise $11,000 to purchase and install a greenhouse. We will also be upgrading the roads and creating a pathway to the greenhouse and interior that is ADA accessible.
