Mount Vernon, Washington- On the evening of June 5th , an 87-year-old Mount Vernon man was disassembling a .22 semi-auto handgun, preparing to store it.
The man was unaware the gun was loaded and the gun went off, the bullet striking his hand.
The injuries were not serious or life threatening so he didn’t seek medical attention until the next day at Skagit Valley Hospital.
According to Lt. Chris Cammock with the Mount Vernon Police Department, the gunshot wound appears accidental and Lt. Cammock reminds everyone that firearms should always be treated as if they are loaded, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction when handling firearms, and know how a firearm operates before it is used.
