Local Crime

Mount Vernon, WA- On June 6th, 2016 a resident in the 100 block of East Evergreen Street in Mount Vernon reported a burglary from his residence between 5:00 am and 2:00 pm.

A thief forced open a back door of the home causing several hundred dollars in damages.  Multiple items were taken during the burglary,  including a black 9mm semi-automatic hand gun, a German WWII 7.62 x 54R Mosin Nagant Rifle, 2 Xbox Game systems, and personal paperwork, including a checkbook.

Officers were able to obtain surveillance video of the burglary from a local business. Upon viewing the video, Officers saw a white male and female suspect enter the yard of the residence at 5:26 am. The couple made multiple trips with boxes and at least one long gun across the street where they stashed the stolen items at the business.  The couple then returned and eventually left with all the items.

Pictures of the couple were sent out to local Law Enforcement agencies, and multiple Officers were able to identify the male as a subject who had been trespassed from a local business recently.  Loss Prevention from the business provided a photo of the suspect they had trespassed.   Officers later confirmed the person on the surveillance video and the trespassed suspect were the same person.  He was  identified as Calvin Longstaff, with a last know address on Evans Drive in Sedro Woolley.

On June 24th, 2016 around 12:45 am, Mount Vernon Officers found Calvin Longstaff asleep in the back seat of a Honda Accord registered to his mother that was parked near the Big Foot Java at College Way and Riverside Drive.  Mr. Longstaff was taken into custody by Officers and the Honda was impounded to the Mount Vernon Police Department.  The owner of the vehicle,  was contacted and said she knew nothing about a burglary involving her son.   She told Officers that Calvin and his girlfriend at the time, Kendall Stafford, obtained items from Kendall’s grandfathers house in Mount Vernon.

Mr. Longstaff was interviewed by Officers at the Police Station and admitted to going into the residence with his then girlfriend, Kendall Stafford and taking belongings from it, but he denied damaging the back door.  He told Officers that Kendall said the residence belonged to her grandfather and he admitted to taking two Xbox game consoles with games and controllers, some alcohol and a couple of boxes of stuff from the house. He denied taking the handgun and rifle because he is a convicted felon.  He told Officers, if guns were taken, they were taken by Kendall.

On June 24th, 2016, Officers obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and found a rifle in the truck of the vehicle that matched the description of the rifle stolen from the residence, however it was missing the bolt.
