Mount Vernon, Washington- The Mount Vernon Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of a person slumped over in a vehicle in the Safeway parking lot around 4:00 pm on August 18th, 2016.
A witness, who only wanted to be identified as Nicole said she was parked next to the man’s vehicle when another shopper started screaming that the man had been shot.
Initially it wasn’t clear who had shot the man or how he ended up shot but Lieutenant Chris Cammock with the Mount Vernon Police Department said a 77-year old man from Illinois appears to have accidentally shot himself in the leg while his wife shopped in the store.
The man was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon but died from his injuries.
The couple from Illinois had been spending a few months camping in Newhalem prior to the accident.
A gun was recovered from inside the vehicle and Lieutenant Chris Cammock said the incident appears to be a tragic accident.
