Island County, WA – The Island County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call around 8:14 p.m. on September 17th, 2017 regarding a 37-year old male who was inside a residence in the Monkey Hill area of Unincorporated Island County. The 9-1-1 caller stated the man was despondent and armed with a weapon.
According to a press release from Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman, Four Island County Sheriff’s Deputies and an Island County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant responded to the 9-1-1 call and arrived at the male’s house within minutes of the call.
Deputies observed the male on the inside of the residence on the second floor, with a long gun in his hand.
A friend of the male arrived at the house and attempted to negotiate with him to drop his weapon. Approximately three hours into the situation, the male exited the residence with his long gun and his friend tried to intervene. A struggle ensued and the male fired several rounds, striking his friend in the leg.
An Island County Sheriff’s Deputy shot the male and he died at the scene. The mans friend sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. An Island County Sheriff’s Deputy was treated and released for a minor hand injury.
The Island County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Skagit Multiple Agency Response Team (S.M.A.R.T) to begin conducting a thorough investigation of the incident. The SMART team is composed of multiple detectives from several Skagit County Police agencies. The SMART team investigation is ongoing.
