Burlington, WA – The JCPenney Store located inside the Cascade Mall in Burlington will close their doors for the final time in May of 2018.
The Burlington location is one of eight JC Penney Stores in eight states that is slated for closure in 2018 as part of the company’s ongoing plan to shutter stores as more sales move online.
According to a release from the company, J.C. Penney operates around 875 department stores, after closing nearly 140 stores across the nation throughout 2017.
JC Penny said the eight store closures will result in about 480 job cuts, 40 of those in Burlington. JC Penny is also closing a fulfillment center in Wisconsin this summer, eliminating more than 600 additional jobs.
JCPenny has locations in Marysville and Bellingham and some employees will be offered jobs at other locations if they are willing to commute to work or move closer to the other locations.
Inventory liquidation will begin on March 5th and the company expects the store will be fully closed around May 12th.
JCPenny has been open since November 11th, 1989 and is one of the largest retailers at the Cascade Mall.
In addition to the Cascade Mall Location, the following seven stores are scheduled to close: Hampton Village Plaza in St. Louis, Mo, Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., Sandburg Mall in Galesburg, IL, Viking Plaza in Alexandria, MN, Washington Park Mall in Bartlesville, OK, Calexico Store in Calexico, CA and Knox Village Square in Mount Vernon, OH.
