Mount Vernon, WA- The Skagit Valley College Athletic Department has announced the male and female Athletes of the Year for 2017-2018. The Athlete of the Year award is based on more than athletic performance alone. It also recognizes academic success, community involvement, and many other qualities that are expected from Cardinal Athletics.
The female athlete of the year, Karly Richardson (of Anacortes) is a fierce competitor who plays on the Skagit Volleyball team and has received league first and second team All Star recognition, and has been on multiple all tournament teams. She not only has a caring nature and positive upbeat attitude that carries over to her teammates, but she is also an outstanding student who is studying to be an ultrasound technician.
The male athlete of the year, Payton Harris (of Boise, Idaho) was a member of the SVC Baseball team. He was a second team North Region All Star and received a Gold Glove award for his outstanding defensive play. Payton is a team leader whose drive and commitment helped lead the Cardinals throughout the season. He is also an outstanding student who plans to transfer to a four-year institution to play baseball.
