Camano Island Man Dies in Crash with Fuel Tanker Near Darrington

Darrington, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a two vehicle, fatal crash,  on Eastbound State Route 530 near milepost 46, 3 miles East of Darrington around 8:13 p.m. on July 3rd, 2018.

According to a press release from the Washington State Patrol, 69-year old James Robert Shields of Camano Island was traveling Eastbound State Route 530 in a red 2002 Chevrolet Silverado Pickup when his vehicle crossed the center line for an unknown reason and struck a 2011 Peterbilt Tractor and Tank Trailer head-on, causing the Tractor to burst into flames.

Mr. Shields died at the scene. The driver of the Tanker, 50-year old Lawrence Rogers of Everett was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and no charges are expected.

The Tractor and Tank Trailer was towed by Dicks Towing, the Silverado was totaled and impounded to North County Towing for  safe keeping.
