Whatcom County, WA– The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal crash on East State Route 542 near Marshall Hill Road around 12:23 a.m. on July 11th, 2018.
According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 20-year old Christopher Lundquist Gust of Custer was traveling Westbound on State Route 542 near Marshall Hill road in a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle when he struck the guardrail. Troopers say his vehicle rotated across the highway to the Eastbound Lane, and struck another guardrail before rolling and coming to rest on its roof. He was reportedly wearing a seat belt and not injured in the crash but transported by aid to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham.
A passenger in his vehicle, 18-year old Cybil Hatcher of Blaine, died at the scene. Troopers say it is unknown if she was wearing a seat belt.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation but Troopers say, Alcohol or drugs are believed to be a factor in the crash and charges are pending against the driver.
The Beetle was impounded to the Washington State Patrol Bellingham Bullpen by Johnson’s Towing.
