Bear Sighting in Mount Vernon along Kulshan Trail

From MVPD
Press Release: Bear Sighting

On 9/6/2019 at approximately 08:30am the Mount Vernon Police Department was dispatched to a report of a black bear in the 1200 block of North Laventure Road. Officers responded to the area and additional sightings placed the bear on the Kulshan Trail heading to the east. Mount Vernon Police Department worked in conjunction with the Mount Vernon School District to ensure the safety of all students at Laventure Middle School. The Mount Vernon School District placed additional transportation measures in place to minimize walking students in the area.

The bear was contained in the area of North 30th and the Kulshan Trail for a period of time. A drone and Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Deputy assisted in the search. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Officers responded with the intent of capturing the bear.

The bear however located a culvert and managed to evade further to the east. The last sighting was in the area of Waugh Road and Seneca. Fish and Wildlife Officers have placed a trap in that area. Additional sightings indicate the bear has continued to move and was last seen in the 4000 block of East Division.

The bear does not appear to be aggressive and has not had any interactions with humans or animals. If you see the bear please do not approach and call 911 with the location. If you are in the immediate area of the sightings take precautions with small animals and children.
