Monroe, WA – Two people have been injured in a head-on crash on State Route 2 in Monroe near milepost 21 around 8:38 a.m. on March 10th, 2020 .
According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 18-year old Fernando Gasparmendez of Gold Bar was traveling Westbound on State Route 2 in a Grey 2013 Toyota Rav4 behind a white 1998 Ford Escort being driven by 43-year old Matthew Ellis of Gold Bar. Troopers say Gasparmendez attempted to pass Ellis’s Escort in a No Passing Zone and struck a black 2005 Mercury Mountaineer that was traveling eastbound head-on. The Mountaineer was being driven by 28-year old Cora Coleman of Snohomish.

Gasparmendez was injured and transported to Providence Medical Center for Treatment. Coleman was injured and transported to Evergreen Medical Center in Monroe. Troopers say Ellis was not injured in the crash. All three drivers were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash according to Troopers.

The cause of the crash is listed as “Bad Passing” Troopers say drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash. The highway was closed in the area during the investigation but has since reopened.
