Skagit County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded with local first responders to a High Risk collision on Eastbound State Route 20 near milepost 146 around 11:19 a.m. on August 23rd, 2020.
According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 33-year old George Shufelt of Bellingham was traveling Eastbound on State Route 20 at a high rate of speed on a black 2016 Yamaha FZ09 Motorcycle. Troopers say near milepost 146, Shufelt crossed the centerline of the highway into oncoming traffic where he struck a maroon 2012 Dodge Ram Pickup that was towing a 2018 Artic Trailer. Shufelt and his motorcycle came to rest in an embankment and the driver of the truck and trailer pulled to the shoulder. Shufelt died at the scene as a result of his injuries from the crash.
Troopers say Shufelt was wearing a USDOT Compliant helmet and that drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash. The cause of Crash was listed at Speed and Crossing the Center Line. Next of Kin notification was completed at the scene.
The driver of the pickup, identified by Troopers as 55-year old Kirk Rowan of Mount Vernon and his passenger, Gail Rowan of Mount Vernon were not seriously injured in the crash. Both occupants of the truck were wearing seatbelts.
The motorcycle and truck were totaled in the crash and the trailer sustained damage. All Three vehicles were towed by Carl’s Towing.
