Skagit County, WA – On 11/20/20 at about 9:46 pm, Skagit Emergency Communications Center received a call from a Mount Vernon woman who said she had driven a car into the Skagit River at the Edgewater boat ramp. Responding Mount Vernon Police Officers confirmed a vehicle was in the river.
Three Boats, two hovercraft, and a UAV from the Skagit County Sheriffs Office Marine patrol, and Skagit County Fire District 3 have been searching the river area surrounding Edgewater Park. As of this press release the vehicle and missing woman have not been located.
Due to the darkness and hazardous conditions posed by the river, the search was suspended at 1am. Multiple search teams with enhanced capabilities such as sonar will be back on scene at daylight.
Dive teams from the US Border Patrol Blaine Sector Special Operations, Whatcom and Kitsap County’s Search and Rescue along with UAV(s) from the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive search of the area and located the missing vehicle at about 1130 am, 300 yards down river from the boat launch. Located inside was a deceased juvenile female from Mount Vernon who is believed to be the original 911 caller. Positive identification of the decedent is pending the Skagit County Coroner’s Office Investigation.
Due to the extreme currents in this area of the river, rescue personnel were unable to recover the vehicle. It will remain in the river until conditions allow for safe removal.
The Mount Vernon Police Department continues to investigate this incident but at this time does not suspect foul play.
