Mount Vernon, WA – In the early morning hours of December 21st, 2021 around 3:25 a.m., a northbound Burlington Northern freight train struck an occupied vehicle at the intersection of South 2nd St and Highway 99 South and Blackburn Rd. The two occupants in the vehicle were uninjured.
The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the car got stuck on the tracks while turning from Blackburn Rd to Hwy 99 South and was unable to get the car free prior to the train striking it. Damage to the vehicle was significant.
The intersection of Blackburn/South 2nd/Hwy99 was closed while the accident was being investigated. The roads have since reopened.
The Mount Vernon Police Department is investigating.
