Bellingham Women Charged with Vehicular Homicide After Crash

Whatcom County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal traffic collision around 11:21 a.m. on June 23rd, 2021 in the 6500 block of State Route 9, just South of Hopewell Road  in Whatcom County.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 26-year old Sylvia Martinez of Bellingham was traveling Southbound on State Route 9 in a blue 2007 Kia Spectra when her vehicle left the roadway to the East. Troopers say her vehicle reentered the roadway and continued Southbound where it was struck by a Northbound  2019 International Tractor Trailer towing multiple enclosed utility trailers.

According to Troopers, Sylvia Martinez was not wearing a seat belt and was critically  injured and transported to St. Joes Hospital in Bellingham for treatment.  A passenger in her vehicle, only identified by Troopers as a Juvenile, died  at the scene.  The Juveniles name and age was not released by Troopers.

The driver of the tractor and trailer was identified by Troopers as 43-Year old Harbaridner Tatla of Port Coquitlam, BC.  He was not injured in the crash.

Troopers say drugs or alcohol are suspected to be a causing factor in the crash and Sylvia Martinez is being charged with Vehicular Homicide.

The Kia Spectra was totaled and impounded as evidence to the Washington State Patrol Bullpen. The Tractor and Trailer sustained reportable damage and were towed by Johnsons Towing.
