Mount Vernon, Washington: The Washington State Patrol responded to a 28 car pile-up, (MCI-Minor) in Skagit County Washington on July 18th, 2015.
According to the Washington State Patrol Press Memo, the accident involved 26 cars, and two semi trucks. A total of seven people were injured and transported to local hospitals. Two of the injured were flown via Airlift Northwest Medical Helicopters to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with critical injuries.
The accident started around milepost 224 in Mount Vernon, Washington when Joseph Steiner, 60 of Everson, suffered some sort of medical emergency while driving a fully loaded 2003 Mack Dump Truck that was towing a 1990 Beall Trailer loaded with sand and gravel. During the medical emergency, the driver of the dump truck crossed all lanes of travel and went through the cable barrier, striking multiple vehicles in the Northbound Lanes of I-5.
Many of the vehicles in the Northbound Lanes were already stopped due to a separate incident in the Northbound lanes, involving an ongoing double homicide investigation by the Washington State Patrol.
The state patrol press memo only listed the involved cars with injured parties. They are listed below.
Vehicle 2: A white 2006 Mazda 3, 4 door. It was driven by, 69 Year old James Sweeney of Marysville, Washington. The driver was injured and Transported to Skagit Valley Hospital. The vehicle was impounded by Budget Towing.
A passenger in vehicle two, 61 year old, Julie Sweeney of Marysville, was injured and transported to Skagit Valley Hosptial in Mount Vernon.
Vehicle 3: A black 2003, Chevrolet Trailblazer, driven by 21 year old Jacob Koch of Liberty Lake. He was critically injured and transported to Skagit Valley Hospital and flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His vehicle was impounded by Budget Towing.
Vehicle 4: A 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, Driven by 73 year old Wayne Pierce of Sultan, Washington. He was injured and transported to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. His vehicle was impounded by Budget Towing.
A passenger in Vehicle four, 74 year old, Judy Pierce of Sultan, WA, was injured and transported to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Vehicle 5: A white 2004 Lexus 4 RX300, driven by 58 year old Julie Person, of Mukilteo, Washington. She was injured and transported to United General Hosptial in Sedro-Woolley. Her vehicle was impounded by Budget Towing.
Vehicle 6: A semi truck, driven by Robert David, 45, of New Westinster, BC. He was not injured and his Tractor was driven from the scene. His trailer was damaged and was towed by Budget Towing.
The other 22 cars involved were not listed on the press memo.
The causing dump truck driver is not facing any charges as he was having a medical emergency when the accident happened. He was flown to Harborview medical center where he was listed in serious condition. The dump truck was impounded by Johnson’s Towing.
