Damage to I-5 overpass from over-height load

Whatcom County, WA-  Work crews will close all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the Birch Bay-Lynden Road overpass near Blaine Tuesday night to continue making repairs to the bridge.

From midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, vehicles will bypass the closure using the Birch Bay-Lynden off-ramp and immediately get back on the interstate using the on-ramp.

There will also be single lane closures on I-5 near the overpass daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the rest of the week. Crews are replacing a 60-foot girder on the bridge, and the repairs are expected to be completed in early April.

The overpass was damaged last spring when it was hit by an excavator being carried on a flatbed truck.
