Burlington, Washington- The following is a draft proclamation that will be read into the record by Mayor Steve Sexton at the Burlington City Council meeting on Thursday May 12, 2016 at 7 PM at Burlington City Hall. Parent, Students and Local Veterans are encouraged to attend the meeting.
The Burlington–Edison Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Tiger Company NJROTC Month – May 2016
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Burlington – Edison High School has had a successful Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) known as the Tiger Company for the last twenty years; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Burlington – Edison Tiger Company NJROTC program is to develop young leaders through the concept of service, citizenship and personal responsibility, emphasizing leadership development, team work and self-discipline through studying physical fitness, maritime heritage, the significance of sea-power, fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, naval aviation, navigation and meteorology; and
WHEREAS, the Burlington – Edison NJROTC program involves students in team activities unavailable elsewhere within the local public school system including: Academics, Air Rifle, Armed Drill, Unarmed Drill, Color Guard, Honor Guard, Orienteering, and Physical Fitness; and
WHEREAS, graduates of the Burlington – Edison NJROTC program have successfully applied the leadership and teamwork skills and attributes gained through participation in the Burlington – Edison NJROTC program throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, the City of Burlington has become aware that the Burlington – Edison Tiger Company NJROTC program is under threat of discontinuance by the Burlington – Edison School District; and
WHEREAS, the Burlington – Edison NJROTC program provides students of all backgrounds and skill levels an invaluable and unequaled opportunity to participate in leadership and character building activities and events that benefit the school system and the broader Burlington community; and
WHEREAS, these skills developed within the NJROTC program are critical to developing well rounded citizens and future leaders of the Burlington community, and are lacking in other available programs.
NOW, THEREFORE be it hereby proclaimed, that the City of Burlington declares the month of May, 2016 as official NJROTC Tiger Company month within the City of Burlington, and encourages the Burlington – Edison School District to retain the NJROTC program in perpetuity.
