Stanwood, Washington – Drivers who travel on State Route 532 to reach Stanwood and Camano Island should begin preparing now for a week-long closure of the highway in mid-August while crews replace a culvert under the highway.

Closure information
Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will close both directions of SR 532 around the clock from 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, until 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19.

The closure affects the highway just west of Interstate 5 between 12th Avenue Northwest/East Sunday Lake Road and 28th Avenue Northwest. Drivers will follow separate, signed passenger-vehicle and freight-truck detour routes.

Culvert replacement
During the closure, crews must dig a 40-foot-deep trench across SR 532 to place an 18-by-10-foot culvert. The new culvert will replace a narrow 4-foot diameter culvert. Replacing the existing culvert will improve fish passage, rebuild the stream-bed to create a more inviting habitat for wildlife, and help to restore historical fish migration patterns and tribal fishing rights.

A 2013 U.S. District Court ruling requires the state to remove culverts that block fish passage beneath state highways. The Secret Creek culvert beneath SR 532 is one of more than 1,000 affected by the ruling.
