Local Crime

Mount Vernon, Washington- The Mount Vernon Police Department responded to reports of a suspicious person walking around an assisted living facility in the 300 block of South Laventure Road on May 28th, 2016.

According to a probable cause affidavit of arrest, obtained by SkagitBreaking.com through a public disclosure request, the reporting party told dispatchers they observed an unknown male wandering around the property carrying a gas can.

Mount Vernon Officers responded and made contact with a male, later identified as 35-year old Cleveland Anderson of North Reed Street in Sedro Woolley.

Mr. Anderson was a suspect in several previously reported  thefts within the past  two months, so Officers detained him for their continued investigation.

During the investigation, Officers determined Mr. Anderson arrived at the care facility in a confirmed stolen vehicle, valued at $2500.00.   Mr. Anderson gave a recorded statement to Officers admitting to taking 2-five gallon cans full of fuel from a shuttle bus on the property.  Officers located the shuttle bus and found a cut gas line with an estimated $300.00 in damage and a half filled gas can under the bus.  Mr. Anderson told Officers he was “giving the gas to a friend for their vehicle.”

Mount Vernon Officers had previously contacted and Interviewed  Mr. Anderson on April 21st, 2016 in reference to other thefts in the area. Mr. Anderson provided Officers with a recorded statement at that time admitting to over ten separate gas and property thefts, between March 21st, 2016 and April 21st, 2016. These thefts included theft of tires/rims, a chop saw and car batteries.  During the recorded interview, Mr. Anderson admitted to trafficking the stolen gas and selling it for $1.50 a gallon and selling the tires and rims for $100 a set. Mr. Anderson was not arrested at this time as he was given an opportunity to recover some of the stolen items. He recovered and returned a chop saw, valued at $400.00 and four tires and rims valued at $1200.

On June 6th, 2016, Detectives interviewed Mr. Anderson again where he admitted to stealing a car in Mount Vernon, committing a burglary at the PUD building in Mount Vernon on June 5th, 2016 with another person, where over $10,000 worth of tools were stolen.
