Mount Vernon, WA – The Mount Vernon Police Department is holding their annual winter coat drive from October 1st through November 30th, 2016.  Winter Forecasts say this winter will be wet and stormy in the Pacific Northwest and with temperatures already dipping into the 40’s at night, the need for warm winter coats has arrived.

For the past five years, Officer Jason Graham and members of the Mount Vernon Police Department have partnered with Community Action of Skagit County to organize a Fall Coat Drive to help keep families warm. Many families in Skagit County turn to Community Action  to fill the need of a warm winter coat due to financial hardships. Community Action works directly with those families to provide the  needed  assistance.

This year the Mount Vernon Police Department will partner with the Skagit Rotary Club and Community Action to supply coats to those in need.

Over the past five years, the Mount Vernon Police Department and Skagit Rotary have both  collected thousands of coats separately. Officer Graham said in a press release “This year our continued partnership with Skagit Rotary will broaden our collection capabilities and allow donors more opportunity to participate.. Our collective goal is to collect 3,000 new or gently used fleece, down or waterproof winter jackets for people of all ages. We will place more donation bins this year and chances are if you shop in Skagit Valley, you will see a donation bin”

The Winter Coat drive officially started on October 1st and will run through November 30th. All donated coats will be taken to Community Action to be distributed in November and December for protection during the areas coldest months.

Community Action uses donated funds to purchase coats to meet the specific needs of individual families, so your dollars and donations go straight to the need in our community.

We’ve included a list of donation drop off locations below with a special thanks and recognition to the businesses who have donated in the past and allowed donation bins to be placed at their businesses.
