Mount Vernon, WA – The Mount Vernon Police Department is now accepting applications for their 2017 Citizens Academy. The Citizens Academy is a twelve-week program designed to provide residents first hand information about how their Police Department Operates.
Skagit Breaking Moderators Chris Nelson and Brian Queen had the opportunity to go through the Mount Vernon Police Department Citizens academy and recommend it to anyone that wants to learn about what it’s like to be a Police Officer in Mount Vernon. Academy participants will get to meet, interact and learn from Mount Vernon Officers and become familiar with the Department’s Policing philosophy.
The purpose of the Citizens Academy is to open the Police Department doors to the community and through education, to increase open communications and understanding between citizens and the Police. Working together, it is easier to identify neighborhood and community problems and effect realistic solutions to solve those problems.
The 2017 Citizens Academy will begin on February 9th, 2017. Participants will meet every Thursday night from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Police Department for 12 weeks. Topics include domestic violence, gangs, Police tactical operations, drug enforcement, use of force, T.E.A.M., Patrol, Investigations, Crime Prevention, Record Keeping, Constitutional Law and more. Participants will learn about the Department’s vision, mission, goals, and values. Participants are given the opportunity to tour the Skagit County Jail, ride along with an on-duty Mount Vernon Police Officer, and sit with a Skagit 9-1-1 dispatcher at the 9-1-1 Center while they answer calls. The classes are interactive and participants are encouraged to ask questions and discuss topics with the instructors.
Participants will also participate in a “mock scene day” on Saturday, April 8th, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. During the mock scene day, participants are provided a hands-on opportunity to experience split-second decision-making situations that Police Officers face daily.
Graduation from the Citizens Academy will be on the night of April 27th, 2017.
The Department’s goal is that Citizens Academy Participants reflect the diverse population of the Community. Anyone 18-year-old and up are eligible and encouraged to apply.
