Skagit County, WA – Steelhead enthusiasts can now purchase a vehicle license plate with an image of Washington’s iconic state fish on them.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), the Steelhead specialty plate went on sale on January 3rd, 2017.  Sales of the specialty plates will be used to help support activities critical to conserving populations of native steelhead.

The WDFW collected the  signatures required last year to seek Legislature approval to offer the new specialty plates and over 4,000 people expressed interest in buying the steelhead license plates.  The 2016 Legislature gave the OK to the WDFW to proceed with the sale of the steelhead license plates.

“We can’t wait to see steelhead license plates on vehicles across this state,” said Kelly Cunningham, deputy assistant director of WDFW’s Fish Program. “This is a great way to help fund efforts to conserve steelhead in Washington.”

In much of Washington State, wild steelhead are listed for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act. The WDFW is currently taking several actions to restore those populations to sustainable levels, including measures that guide fisheries management, hatchery operations, monitoring and habitat-restoration programs.

The initial cost of the special wildlife-themed background plates ranges from $54 to $72 depending on the vehicle, in addition to regular license fees. More information on how to purchase your own steelhead license plate can be found by clicking here.
