Bellingham Motorcyclist Dies in Crash on Guide Meridian

Bellingham, WA– The Washington State Patrol responded to a fatal motorcycle  crash around 2:51 p.m. in the 5900 block of the Guide Meridian on February 17th, 2017.

According to a press release from the Washington State Patrol, 68-year old Wilfred Maas of Bellingham was traveling Northbound on the Guide Meridian (SR 539) on a 2005 Honda Motorcycle in lane one of two.   A 2001 Dodge Durango driven by 30-year old Hermelinda Platon-Lopez of Bellingham pulled out of a parking lot in front of him. The motorcyclist collided with the Durango in lane one of the Northbound Lanes, killing Mr. Maas.

The driver of the Durango was not injured, her vehicle was totaled but driven from the scene. Troopers say drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash.  Troopers also said,  Mr. Maas was wearing a US DOT Compliant helmet and had a valid motorcycle endorsement.

The cause of the crash is listed as Fail to yield right of way. Charges are pending against the driver of the Durango.
