Homicide Investigation

Members of the Burlington community began reporting gunshots in the area of Heritage Place around 11:30 pm on Thursday, 03/30/17. Witnesses claimed to have heard a woman screaming, followed by multiple shots. The Burlington Police department has released the following statement:

 

At approximately 2325 on 03/30/17, Burlington Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Heritage Place for the report of a male who had been shot. A number of callers reported hearing gunshots in the area. When officers arrived, they found a 16 year old Burlington male that had been shot multiple times. The 16 year old male was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers and investigators from Washington State Patrol, Skagit County Sheriff’s, Mount Vernon Police, and Sedro Woolley Police department responded to help at the scene.

One of the suspects, a 15 year old Burlington Male who was believed to be the shooter, was taken into custody a short time later at his residence in Burlington. He is being held at Skagit County Juvenile Detention for investigation of 2nd degree murder.

Detectives are still looking for one other person of interest in this investigation. At this time, the shooting does not appear to have been a random incident and is reported to have occurred during a physical altercation between the involved parties. Though the exact motive for the altercation and shooting is unclear, the parties are believed to be gang related.
