Troopers Respond to Fatal Crash in Whatcom County

Whatcom County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a  single vehicle crash on Southbound I-5 near milepost 274 around 6:08 a.m. on September 24th, 2017.

According to a press release from the Washington State Patrol, a vehicle   was traveling Northbound on  I-5 at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and drove into the median for several hundred feet.

Troopers say the vehicle then struck a guardrail between the North and Southbound overpass before it went airborne before landing on West Road, approximately twenty feet below I-5.  The vehicle continued traveling North on West Road for approximately another 100 feet, coming to rest on its top, where it was fully engulfed in flames.

Troopers say the driver was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. The name of the driver has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash is listed as “speed”.
