Mount Vernon, WA – Rosemary Kaholokula, Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor for Skagit County has filed criminal charges this morning against Mount Vernon Resident JOHN MENDIETA for Controlled Substance Homicide. This case addresses one of the larger problems that the criminal justice system is facing.
MENDIETA was arrested on the evening of November 1st, 2018 as a result of a nearly six-month investigation by the Mount Vernon Police Department after the death of a 27-year old man on May 11th, 2018.
Court documents detail that the deceased man allegedly purchased what he thought were Percocet Pills but in fact were pills laced with Fentanyl. Mount Vernon Detectives served search warrants on cell phones and recovered video surveillance from several locations, leading to the arrest of MENDIETA.
Kaholokula stated that the public needs to be warned that there are pills being sold on the street that are purported to be Percocet but that in fact contain the highly lethal substance Fentanyl. Kaholokula went on to state that Law Enforcement has seized many of these pills over the last several months. Even before the influx of the highly lethal Fentanyl on the street, opioid overdose deaths have had a huge negative impact on Skagit County.
MENDIETA will make his first court appearance in Skagit County Superior Court today at 1:30 p.m. He is currently being held in the Skagit County Community Justice Center on No Bail.
This is the fourth arrest in Skagit County for Controlled Substance Homicide in the last six months.
