In trying to navigate the new era of live music, local artists have been developing creative ways to bring their craft to the public. None of us are sure how our world will look on the other side of COVID-19. What we do know is that some things will be changed forever. Live streaming performances is a trend that is beginning to evolve in the music industry…. and this is a trend that, in my opinion, will still be around long after COVID-19 is done. There are some disadvantages … the immediate feedback that the musicians receive is reduced to a few comments and “clapping hands” or “heart” emojis, and the viewers aren’t able to fully participate in the live music experience energy. However, there are many positive aspects to this fresh approach. Primarily, musicians who have not been able to break into the club/bar scene now have an audience. Maybe only a few people watch when the video is live, but if those viewers enjoyed it, they could share the video. There are so many talented artists, but sometimes it’s just a matter of luck, or knowing the right people, to get their material out there. Live Streaming increases the chances vastly that they may be discovered and see their dreams of having a successful future in the music industry come to fruition. And for the viewer, there are a variety of live music choices at your fingertips. A positive aspect for myself, as a viewer, is that the video will stay up after the live streaming is complete, so I’m able to see ALL the shows instead of having to cherry pick a few out of a dozen that I’ve been looking forward to seeing.

Most all of the artists have set up tipping apps. Of course you don’t have to tip ….. but if you enjoyed a performance, please do. Even if it’s just a few dollars. Most of these artists depend on the income they receive from their live shows. Now with all the venues shut down, they are hurting along with the venue owners and employees. The artists that have already “made it” don’t need your money. But these local musicians DO. Plus, they will spend any money you donate back into the local economy. Also …. if you liked the performance, share the video and send a positive message to the artist. Everyone likes to be appreciated and positive reinforcement is priceless.
