Bicyclist Airlifted to Hospital After Being Struck by Car in Island County

Island County, WA – The Washington State Patrol responded to a “High Risk” Motor Vehicle Collison around 12:33 p.m.  on State Route 525, Just North of Mutiny Bay Road on July 28th, 2020.

According to a press memo from the Washington State Patrol, 24-year old Stephen Cairns of Seattle was Southbound on State Route 525 on the right shoulder of the road, when he was struck by a silver 2002 Honda Civic being driven by 26-year old Brittany Wright of Oak Harbor. Troopers say Wright’s vehicle drove onto the shoulder and struck the bicyclist before both the bicycle and the Honda came to rest in the ditch.

Stephen Cairns was airlifted to Providence Hospital Colby Campus and Brittany Wright was transported to Providence Hospital Colby Campus with injuries.

Troopers say Cairns was wearing a helmet and Wright was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It is unknown is drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
