Whatcom County, WA – The Ferndale Police Department responded to reports from a pedestrian around 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 17th, 2021 that there were skid marks and car parts in the roadway where Cherry Street turns into Ferndale Road in Ferndale.
Ferndale Police Officers responded to the scene and reportedly saw something submerged in the water, but were unable to do a Water Rescue until Tuesday Morning due to inclement weather conditions.
Officers and multiple other agencies responded to the river on Tuesday morning and retrieved a vehicle from the Nooksack River adjacent to Ferndale Road. Inside the vehicle, rescuers found two deceased male occupants in the vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing but the Ferndale Police Department Public Information Officer said current evidence points to a tragic accident.
The Ferndale Police Department, Whatcom Search and Rescue, Whatcom Fire District 7, The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Border Patrol, Heston’s Hauling, Whatcom County Support Officers and the Washington State Patrol assisted with the incident and recovery of the vehicle.
The names of the victims is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
