16-Year old Arrested for Participating in Walmart Shooting

Mount Vernon, WA – A 16-year-old Mount Vernon teen was booked in the Skagit County Juvenile Detention Center on the evening of July 24th, 2022, after turning himself in for his involvement in the Mount Vernon Walmart Shooting incident.

On July 25th, 2022, the court granted investigators a 30-day Magistrates Warrant to hold the juvenile while they work to reconstruct events for what occurred that night from witness
accounts, physical evidence, scene reconstruction, video footage, tip call-ins and more.

Sergeant Mike Don said, β€œAlthough we’re still early on in the investigation, we’ve made significant progress this past week. We appreciate the patience from our community and cooperation we’ve
received.”

Police Chief Chris Cammock said, β€œOur community has rightfully expressed alarm at what occurred and wants accountability for these intolerable actions. We share those sentiments and
are working at length to bring those responsible before a court.”

Chief Cammock has also asked that residents resist quick judgments about whether the gang involvement in this case reflects the quality of life we expect in Mount Vernon and Skagit County.
Certainly, there are individuals who choose gang subculture for their lifestyle; however, they are far outnumbered by people who won’t tolerate it. We see this when people report and remove
graffiti, work beside them in our schools, neighborhoods and youth programs providing healthy alternatives and when it’s a serious event, they come forward to help.
Every community is susceptible to gang subculture because it attracts people who are a sub-set of society. As a community and justice system, we decide what is tolerable and unacceptable.

Police Chief Chris Cammock
