Reminder: A large rock slide has covered about 300 feet of SR 20 east of milepost 142, which is near the Whatcom/Skagit County line.
The rockslide is well east of where we close the gate for the winter. However, to reopen the highway on time next spring, the slide needs to be cleared now. That means the closed section of SR 20 that normally is accessible to cross country skiers, snowshoers and snow mobiles will not be available for winter recreation for about a month starting Monday, Jan. 5, 2015.
Our contractor crews need to keep the road plowed to remove the rock that covers the highway. Once work is complete, the road will be available for winter recreation.
