Custer, Washington: On May 30th, 2015, a couple of roommates on Birch Terrace Lane, found their beloved cats had been beaten, nearly to death, by an unknown individual. A third cat, was also beaten and died in the attack.
This is the story of Frigg, Mr. Wilson, Smokey and their humans who love them.
Frigg is a beautiful 3 year old, Bengal mix. Jessica Lindsey, rescued Frigg in December of 2014.
Early in the morning on May 30th, “Frigg” bolted outside when she opened her front door, and stayed out for about an hour. She thought nothing of it, because Frigg was previously an inside/outside cat before she adopted her. When Frigg came back home, Jessica noticed she was struggling to walk on her hind legs. Jessica thought maybe Frigg was playing and tweaked something, so as any good human would do, Jessica brought Frigg inside and kept her confined in her room. She put Frigg on her bed, and left her for a little bit. When Jessica returned to check on Frigg, she tried to get up- but couldn’t. Jessica tried to pet her back, and Frigg screamed out in pain. That is when Jessica knew something was really wrong.
Frigg was taken to the vet right away. The vet took X-rays and found severe swelling around Friggs’ lower spine. The swelling and location of the injury was consistent with blunt force trauma, from something like a baseball bat. Frigg, luckily doesn’t have any broken bones but she was given a lot of pain and anti-inflammatory medication, and was sent home with Jessica in the afternoon.
Frigg was the “lucky” one in the incident. Although she is still in a lot of pain, and cannot walk on her back legs she is doing better than her furry friend, Mr. Wilson. Jessica says Frigg is getting a lot of love and attention, and will see the vet again later this week for a follow up.
The same morning around 3 am, her roommate, Katie Graves let her cat “Mr. Wilson” out. Mr. Wilson is mainly an indoor cat who will go out here and there for about an hour or so at a time. Mr. Wilson stayed out when his humans went to bed.
A couple hours later, Katie, went out to get him and feed her dog and Mr. Wilson hobbled up with an obvious broken leg. Mr. Wilson was taken to the vet where they performed X-Rays to confirm the break. The vet thinks someone hit Mr. Wilson with a blunt force object, possibly a baseball bat or something similar.
Mr. Wilson was rescued from a dumpster when he was just a week old. He is kinda known around town through Petco, and friends as he is named after the Seattle Seahawks Star Quarterback, Russell Wilson. He rocks Seahawks Apparel, a Seahawks Collar and Id Tag and his cast is, of course, Seahawks Colors with the Russell Wilson #3 on it.
A third cat, Smokey, owned by a neighbor, was not so lucky. Smokey passed away after being beaten to death.
Smokey’s human told the two roommates that she called 9-1-1 to report that her cat, was killed to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
A follow up phone call to the Whatcom County Sheriff confirmed otherwise. The Whatcom County Sheriff told the ladies that they had not received any reports of a cat being beaten to death. They have since opened an investigation into the matter. No arrests have been made in the incident.
The owner of Smokey, even went as far as to send a message to the women with details on why their cats were possibly injured. Here is a copy of that text message with the owners name removed.
The message states: “Police Officer called me and informed me that it was one of the crack heads and it was because I wouldn’t give them a ride. He was bragging about it. He thought your cats were my other two cats.”
The two woman have started a Facebook page with updates on their injured cats. The Facebook page is Titled “Justice for Wilson, Frigg and Smokey” and can be accessed by clicking here.
