Operational issue at Puget Sound Refinery

Refinery PhotoInformation from the Shell.Us Website about the operational disruption that happened around 11:00 am this morning at the Shell Puget Sound Refinery in Anacortes.  An official “press release” statement from the refinery is below.
ANACORTES – “Friday morning around 11:00 am the Shell Puget Sound Refinery experienced an operational disruption on-site. No injuries or leaks have been reported. A Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) Level Zero notification has been issued, meaning no offsite impact is expected at this time, though residents may notice some flaring at the facility. A flare is a safety device used to safely combust excess gases in the refinery.

Refinery employees are working to resolve the issue as safely and quickly as possible. The health and safety of the community and our people are of the utmost importance. Refinery employees are continuing to conduct air-monitoring in and around the refinery, and monitoring results by Shell personnel have not detected off-site impact at this time, apart from the visible smoke from the flare system. Shell encourages residents to contact the Refinery’s hotline at 360-293-1797 if they have any questions, comments, or concerns.

We will comply with the applicable regulations and keep the appropriate agencies informed while we address this issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We will also provide further updates. Shell would like to thank our operations team and other plant personnel for immediately responding to this issue.”
