Wildfire Update: File Photo

Newhalem, WA: August 24th, 2015: 9:30 AM update. The “Upper Skagit Complex” Wildfire in  Marblemount, Washington has grown another 667 acres overnight to a  total of 4,342 acres between the eight (8) fires.

The Fire, which was caused by lightening,  is still 0% contained and has been burning since around August 10th, 2015.

The Incident Information System states the Goodell Fire in Newhalem  was the most active overnight. The fire spread primarily on the southeast part of the fire, south of Newhalem and east of the park’s visitor center.

The east flank has crossed Gorge Creek. Heavy smoke is limiting the ability of fire managers to accurately map the other fires in the complex of fires.

Acreage for the smaller fires is attributed to field and aerial reconnaissance and they pose no immediate threat to facilities and infrastructure.

Today, August 24th, 2015, firefighters will continue to assess and implement structure protection measures in the towns of Newhalem and Diablo, as well as around the national park visitor center.

Fire engine crews continue implementing hose lays, pumps, sprinkler systems, and removing vegetation to protect infrastructure. In addition direct suppression efforts continue to keep the fire from moving west of Goodell Creek.

Hazardous driving conditions along State Route 20 continue to limit access for firefighters and Seattle City Light crews.  State Route 20 remains closed in both Directions from Thornton Creek Rd (MP 118) to the Skagit County Line (MP 157) until further notice.  Washington Department of Transportation has kept the highway closed due to the hazardous road conditions. The fire has loosened soil, rock, and vegetation which continue to move/roll  down the steep slopes onto the roadway creating a continuing unpredictable driving hazard.

For the latest information about SR 20 closures, please call the North Cascades Highway Recorded Hotline at 360-707-5055. This will be updated whenever conditions change. Do not call 911 requesting Road Closure information on Highway 20. Save the above phone number into your cell phone and use it instead.

Multiple trail, campground, and boat launch closures remain in effect. North Cascades National Park Complex closures are found at http://www.nps.gov/noca/planyourvisit/current-park-conditions.htm.
