Skagit and Whatcom communities are supporting their four legged officers in a really important way; funding their Kevlar vests.
Keeping K-9s in Kevlar is a Bellingham non-profit charity with a mission, as their name might suggest, to protect their K-9 officers with the Kevlar vests government funds don’t provide.
Cost for each vest is a minimum of $2,426 and many departments just can’t afford it for their dogs, who are so loyal that they’re described as being the first to blindly rush into gunfire. For K-9s without vests, this can often mean an unfortunate end to man’s best friend.
However, Kevlar vests are an excellent supplement to their safety! According to their Facebook page, Keeping K-9s in Kevlar has helped to vest 6 K-9s in Skagit and Whatcom County to date, and are completely run by volunteers, so all donations benefit the dogs. They describe themselves as different because “Each vest carries a patch in memory of a Fallen Officer. The K-9 handler chooses who their K-9’s Kevlar vest will honor.”
They continue to rely on the community’s donations to save the dogs! They make it remarkably easy to help out with a GoFundMe page, donation jars in many local businesses or by mailing a check. We’ve included that information below.
