Update: Coroner Releases Name of Man Shot by Homeowner in Sultan Burglary

SULTAN, Washington. – According to a press release from Shari Ireton, Director of Communications for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, Detectives continue to investigate a shooting that occurred following a break-in at the 13700 block of Woods Lake Road around 8:30 pm last night.

A 75 year-old male resident of the home told deputies that he was watching TV when he saw an unknown male on his back porch.  He said that the suspect broke down a door to make entry to the home and, when he did, he hit the man on the head and began stabbing him in the abdomen.

The homeowner’s 80 year-old wife said she retrieved a gun and shot the suspect, who was found by arriving deputies collapsed in the doorway of the front room.

  The homeowners’ adult son was sleeping in another part of the house when the incident occurred.  The suspect, a 25 year-old Gold Bar man, died at the scene.

The 75-year old male stabbing victim is in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit  at Harborview Regional Medical Center in Seattle. He was airlifted there by Airlift Northwest medics.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner has completed the identification of the 25-year old male burglary suspect.

The Medical Examiner says the decedent is Steven N. Sheppard of Gold Bar. The cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is listed as  homicide.

Woods Lake Rd between Florence Acres Road and Old Owen Road re-opened around 4 a.m this morning.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident and charges, if any, will be recommended to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office when the investigation is complete.
