Body Recovered After Man Jumps From Port Townsend Ferry

Port Townsend, Washington- The Washington State Patrol responded to reports of an abandoned vehicle on board  the Washington State Ferry “Kennewick” after the vessel docked in Port Townsend and offloaded all other vehicles from the Vessel on August 18th, 2016.

According to the  Washington State Patrol, a search of the abandoned vehicle, a 1995 Ford Aerostar uncovered a suicide note and wallet belonging to an 81-year old man from Poulsbo, Washington.

A review of surveillance video showed the man  jumping from the vessel shortly  after departing Coupeville en route to Port Townsend. His jump was not witnessed by any passengers or Ferry employees.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Jefferson County Fire Department conducted a lengthy water search for the man by boat and helicopter but were unsuccessful in locating him.

The Vehicle was impounded for safe keeping by All City Towing.

On August 20th, 2016, the body of an elderly man that matches the description of the man who jumped from the Ferry was located floating in the water near Fort Casey State Park by a sailboat operator.

The body was recovered from the water just before 1:00 pm by Island County Marine Rescue Units and Central Whidbey Fire & Rescue.

The Man who jumped from the Ferry has not been identified. The Island County Coroners Office will release information on the body recovered from the water once the man is identified and next of kin is notified.
