Bellingham International Airport Evacuated

Bellingham, Washington–  The Bellingham International Airport was evacuated around 3 pm today after a medium sized black suitcase was found unattended on the sidewalk of the passenger pickup area.   A swab of the suitcase by airport screeners tested positive for explosives.

Bellingham Police evacuated the Airport lobby as a precaution and moved about 300 passengers into lock down in the  the post screening area. They were far enough away from the area of concern and all passengers were fine.

The Bomb Squad was brought in and a bomb robot was deployed to obtain X-rays of the suitcase.  This is a lengthy process and takes time to complete.

Around 5 pm the Bellingham Police Department notified passengers that the bomb robot verified through the x-rays that the suitcase was completely empty.

Passengers were allowed to head back in to check in and go through pre-flight screening around 5:10 pm.

The Bellingham Police Department wanted to Thank the Passengers for their patients as they assured everyone’s safety.

The Airport should now be back on normal operations although delays are possible.
